In light of the intention to bring MK Elazar Stern's conversion bill to a vote tomorrow in the Knesset plenum for approval on second and third readings, the Rishon LeZion, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, wrote an urgent letter to the Prime Minister, asking him to prevent the bill from being brought to a vote.

In his letter, the Chief Rabbinate called MK Stern's bill "destructive," and wrote, among other things: "Needless to say, the serious implications of this type of legislation without the Chief Rabbinate's consent. Passing the said bill will create a situation of second-class Jews in the State of Israel and make the conversion process unacceptable to many communities. As a result, we as Jews who are commanded by the commandment to "love the stranger" may, God forbid, fail in the sin of "deceiving the stranger" when, when he comes to marry, he will encounter obstacles of not recognizing his Judaism.".

In his letter, he asked the Prime Minister to prevent the proposal from being raised and instead formulate a proposal that is agreed upon by the Chief Rabbinate.

""At this time," the First of Zion concluded his letter, "when the people of Israel are attacked by their enemies, we must increase our internal unity. A discussion of a controversial proposal at this time is inappropriate and does not contribute to the realization of this goal.".
