Celiac patients? You'll pay more. Data published by the Israeli Consumer Council shows that the price of gluten-free food products is approximately 400% higher than similar regular products. •
As part of the weekly basket of basic consumer products tests conducted by the Israeli Consumer Council, the gap between the price of "regular" food products with gluten and identical products without gluten was examined this week. And the data is surprising: While you will pay an average of 2.40 NIS per 100 grams for a regular Pati Bar biscuit, the price of a gluten-free biscuit is an average of 12.90 NIS, a difference of 438%. In the segmentation by marketing chain, it was found that the price at the Co-op chain is the most expensive at 15.30 NIS, and at the Osher chain the cheapest for a gluten-free biscuit is 10.90 NIS. Gluten-free bread from Barel costs an average of 19.08 NIS, compared to white bread, which costs only 5.11 NIS.
Another product tested is Cornflakes. The cheapest price of Cornflakes Telma is 1.59 NIS per 100 grams, at the Rami Levy chain. In contrast, gluten-free cornflakes will cost an average of 4.25 NIS per 100 grams, a difference of 168%. The most expensive are the Big Zol chain with 5.38 NIS per 100 grams of gluten-free cornflakes, and the cheapest are at the Osher Up chain - 3.18 NIS per 100 grams.
Many people who suffer from celiac disease and are sensitive to gluten are forced to use only gluten-free products, and as mentioned, are also forced to pay much more, even for a slice of bread.
The Israeli Consumer Council asks, in light of this data, isn't it time to also include basic gluten-free food products in the basket of products under supervision?
In the meantime, what we have on the subject are many question marks, without an answer.
