The confrontation between the 'Bnei Torah' movement and 'Degel Hatorah' also made headlines today in the Bnei Brak municipality: A controversy developed in the city council when 'Etz' representative Haim Rochamkin claimed that Yated Ne'eman and Degel Hatorah support the 'Erchot Torah' yeshiva, on the issue of construction in the yeshiva building.
The Bnei Torah movement recently went to court, claiming that the expansion of the yeshiva building is disrupting regular traffic on Hashomer Street in the city. City officials, however, explain that This is a road lined with Simcha halls all along its length, and the yeshiva is just one building among many. The representatives' appeal drew criticism, according to which 'an appeal was made to the courts against Torah study.'.
During the discussion, which dealt with the Christian traffic jams on Hashomer Street when leaving the city, Council Member Ruhamkin turned to the mayor and said: "Yated and Degel Hatorah are giving them backing. I'm asking a real question.".
Mayor Hanoch Seibert did not agree to develop the discussion, and told Ruhamkin: "If you speak against the Torah flag, then we will have to take it off the agenda. If you want to talk about Hashomer Street - I can answer.".
As for the substance of the matter - the traffic jams - the mayor explained: "This issue is being addressed on an ongoing basis. We invest a lot of energy in it. We don't always succeed, but the issue is being addressed.".
