Colombian President Gustavo Petro caused a stir today (Wednesday) when he spoke at the UN Security Council - comparing Israel's activities in Gaza to the Nazi regime.
A few days ago, he was fired when he tweeted the Nazi chant "Heil Hitler" on X Network, a tweet that drew condemnation around the world and led to harsh criticism of his statements toward Israel.
During his speech, Petro claimed that what is happening in Gaza is reminiscent of the Nazi era. "Twenty thousand people were killed in Gaza. You can't hide these numbers. And that's the real connecting thread of my words here: We are returning to the Nazi era.".
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, sharply criticized the Colombian president's remarks and the very fact that the stage was set for such statements in the Security Council. "It is not clear what he took before this morning's discussion, but nothing justifies his words.".
Danon added: "The UN Security Council was not established to serve as a platform for delusional ideological perceptions and to distort the memory of the Holocaust. Giving legitimacy to this cynical rhetoric harms the memory of the Holocaust and clearly undermines the credibility of the UN institution. When world leaders use Hitler and Goebbels to attack political opponents, they are fueling dangerous anti-Semitic discourse. Petro - you should be ashamed of your words.".
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar also attacked: "The disgraceful outgoing president of Colombia is a stain on his great nation. This anti-Semite systematically belittles the memory of the Holocaust. He is a communist who destroyed his great country. Soon he will be history.".
