Ahead of the Lag BaOmer celebrations: The Fire and Rescue Commission warns of weather conditions and urges the public to exercise caution when lighting bonfires.
The commission notes that the strong winds and high temperatures could cause fires to spread rapidly and put human lives at risk.
Following the warnings from the fire department and forecasting system, municipalities across the country, including Haifa, Nesher, Hadera and Tel Aviv, called for people to avoid lighting bonfires this evening.
The Haifa Municipality today called on the public not to light bonfires throughout the city due to the weather conditions. Lag BaOmer activities at educational institutions and community events have been canceled, and the municipality announced that inspectors will enforce the instructions and extinguish bonfires that are found to be dangerous.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection has published a series of guidelines for the public on how to proceed when lighting bonfires.
The fire and rescue services ask that the location of the bonfire is not near gas and fuel facilities, away from telephone and power lines, and is not surrounded by vegetation or near residential buildings.
In addition, they warn that in order to prevent injuries, only dry wood products should be lit, liquid and chemical combustibles should be avoided, and the fire should be lit with the wind in mind. In addition to these instructions, it is recommended to light a fire while wearing woven clothing and closed shoes, keep children away, and ensure that water, sand, or other extinguishing agents are available.
