Conspiracy theories are not a new phenomenon in the Western world, but in the past week it has become clear that they almost claimed lives.
The hix website reported that Edgar Madison, a 28-year-old American, burst into a pizza shop called "Pizza Gate" and opened fire.
Why did he do this? The amazing answer is: He was convinced that human flesh was being sold there.
How did he come up with this strange idea? It turns out that last October, when the contents of Hillary Clinton's emails were revealed on the WikiLeaks website, a rumor developed that the emails contained encrypted correspondence referring to the Comet Ping-Pong pizzeria, of which Pizza Gate is one of its branches in Washington.
It is believed that the pizzeria is actually a cover for a criminal organization that traffics in humans – specifically, small children. Thousands of users, it turns out, believe in this rumor and conspiracy, as does Edgar, who apparently decided to confront the 'child traffickers'.
Edgar's sentence will be handed down in June, while at the same time the Comet Ping-Pong company announced that it had hired a security company to protect its businesses from people who, like Edgar, believe that they are trading in human flesh.
