In a discussion held today (Monday) in the State Audit Committee on discrimination against the ultra-Orthodox in the Ministry of Education's "Great Freedom School" camp program, MK David Azulai of Shas argued that the Ministry of Education's policy deepens the gaps between different populations in the education system.
""I am a resident of Acre, I pay taxes legally, I served in the IDF and I don't understand why my children are to blame for sending them to Haredi education - what is their crime?!" said Azoulay in the heated debate, in which Knesset members Moshe Gafni, Uri Maklev, Israel Eichler, and Hanin Zoabi participated.
""In accordance with the Ministry of Education's directive, a situation has arisen in which two children live in the same building in Acre - one will be entitled to summer camp and the other will not, just because he is Haredi, just because his parents decided to send him to such an education, which is not according to the worldview of the Minister of Education," said Azoulay.
Dr. Yitzhak Kadman, Director General of the National Council for the Welfare of Children, told the Minister of Education: "I ask you to change the regulation for now and include Haredi education in the Great Vacation program.".
The Minister of Education claimed that only students studying in public education will benefit from the program, and he has no intention of changing that.
In response, MK David Azoulay announced that he would petition the High Court of Justice to change the matter: "The plan presented by Minister Piron will not stand the test of the High Court," he said.
