Evan Williams, founder of the social network Twitter, has apologized for "helping make Donald Trump president of the United States.".
Williams apologized to the American public for the social media platform helping Trump win the presidential election.
In an interview with the prestigious New York Times, Williams was asked about Trump's statement - who tweeted in March: "I think I might not be here without Twitter. I say this because of the very dishonest press that publishes false news about me. In fact, except for Fox, who was fair to me, everyone else, especially CNN, is against me.".
In response, the founder of the social network replied: "If this is true and without me and Twitter, Donald Trump would not have been elected president and currently sitting in the White House, then yes, I'm sorry.".
The American president has over 30 million followers on his personal Twitter account, which is known to be very active, and 17.7 million followers on the official Twitter account of the 'President of the United States,' which is managed by the White House.
Regarding Twitter's role on the Internet and the side effects that arose from its establishment, Williams said: "I thought the world would be a better place if a platform were established where everyone could speak freely and exchange ideas mutually.".
He says he now understands that he was wrong: "The Internet highlights and rewards extremism in all areas.".
