In the Mea Shearim neighborhood, bonfires were lit in honor of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. Those who did not travel to Meron arrived equipped with cardboard boxes to protect themselves from the heat spread by the flames. They watched the bonfires of yeshiva students - and of the extreme Haredim who burned Israeli flags and a Haredi soldier doll.
