If until now the mechanical solution to pain of any kind was to take painkillers, British Mark Goddard has proven that there are definitely other solutions. After suffering from pain in his hand for a long time, and doctors allegedly refused to operate on him, Goddard built a kind of homemade guillotine in his yard and cut off his own hand. After the amputation, the man burned his hand to prevent any possibility of reattachment through surgery.

The British newspaper Nid Devon Gazette reports that Duvard suffered from severe pain in his left hand for 16 years following a serious motorcycle accident, and after all treatments were ineffective, he asked his doctors to operate on his hand. The doctors who examined him refused to authorize surgery, and Duvard began toiling away on making a guillotine in his yard. After about two weeks of strenuous work, he managed to build a device that combined parts of iron, wood, and an axe blade, and when none of his family noticed him, he carried out the terrifying act.

In a conversation with the British newspaper, Goddard said that he had undergone three psychiatric evaluations that determined that his mental state was completely normal. He said he took the extreme action in light of the attitude of the doctors who did not help him stop the pain, he said.

And what now? Goddard declares that amputation of the hand is only the first step. "If the doctors continue to ignore my pain and do not operate on me by the end of December 2014, I will amputate my hand above the elbow as well.".

In halakhic literature, a case of self-harm is discussed, and it is prohibited. According to the Ridvz, the reason for this is particularly fascinating: the prohibition of harming what is not one's. Since the Land and its fullness are not "a man's soul we have bought," and one has no right to harm property that does not belong to him, in other words, do not steal for yourself the hand that is not yours.
