Barkan Winery is launching a new wine collection: the Altitude series from the 2010 vintage and the Assemblage series from the 2011 vintage. The series will include seven types of wines.
Altitude Series:
Altitude Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 vintage 412+
100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyards: Avni-Eitan, southern Golan Heights; Dishon, Emek Kadesh (12%), which underwent an extended fermentation of 4 weeks and spent 14 months in French oak barrels. The color is ruby-crimson. Its taste and aroma reveal raspberry, cassis and black cherry, with shades of dark chocolate, espresso and touches of allspice and mint. The seasoning is generous and rich and the finish is long and pleasant. Price: 120 NIS.
Altitude Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 vintage 624+
100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Alma vineyard in the Upper Galilee, which fermented for at least 4 weeks before being aged for 14 months in mostly French oak barrels. The aroma is weaker than its predecessor, but black fruits, spices and Mediterranean herbs are still noticeable, along with hints of smoke. And a long, caressing finish. Will continue to improve in the next three years or more. Price: 120 NIS.
Altitude Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 vintage 720+
100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Mount Godarim vineyard in the Upper Galilee, which were fermented for at least 4 weeks before being aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, most of which are new. Of the three wines tasted, this one has the most prominent and complex flavor of the Sisert, and like its predecessors, it will benefit from at least two more years of aging. The wine has a delicate aroma with hints of eucalyptus and oak resin that blend with raspberry, cassis and cherry, and continue into a long finish. Price: 120 NIS.
New in the series: Altitude Merlot 711+, 2009
To the altitude series that was composed of So far only Cabernet Sauvignon varietal wines have been added this year, along with a Merlot wine, 100% varietal, which comes from a small vineyard on Mount Godarim in the Upper Galilee, at an altitude of 711 meters above sea level, and underwent a fairly warm fermentation that continued with a long soaking on the skins for about 30 days. It was then aged in new French oak barrels for 16 months. Its color is bright red-black and it contains generous fruity flavors (plums and cherries), nutty and warm spices. Ready to drink now, soft in the mouth and with a pleasant finish. Recommended. Price: 120 NIS.
Assemblage Series:
Eitan 2011 ASSEMBLY
The wine is named after "Har Eitan", a prominent landmark in the Jerusalem mountains. Consists of: Syrah (34%), Merlot (32%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (34%). The different plots were harvested separately, each plot at the right time, and aged separately in oak barrels for 12 months. A delicate and elegant wine with a low alcohol content for Israel (13.5%) which makes it very pleasant to drink. Price: 85 NIS.
Basil 2011 ASSEMBLAGE
This wine originates from several plots in the Upper Galilee, mainly in the Alma vineyard area, where Ben Zimra was named. Composition: Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (28%), Syrah (5%) and Petit Verdot (12%). After a long fermentation, the various ingredients were aged for 12 months in new oak barrels, and at the end of the fermentation, a red wine was obtained that displays touches of ripe red fruit that combine with sage and dark chocolate, which will develop well in the coming years. Price: 85 NIS.
Tzafit 2011 ASSEMBLY
Unlike Eitan and Rihan, which come from growing areas known for their quality, the Jerusalem Mountains and the Upper Galilee, the third area, Tel Tzfit, is still a kind of "crazy card." A warm area with experimental vineyards in the Nahal Sorek area with a distinctly unconventional composition of varieties: Marcellin (57%), Caldoc (26%), Pinotage (12%), Carignan (5%). Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, about 50% new. The attitude towards this wine is ambivalent: some will connect with it immediately and some will have to let it relax a little in the glass. In any case, it combines ripe and sweet fruit, raspberries and strawberries, a hint of lime, alongside spicy spices and touches of thyme. Price: 85 NIS.
