We are still under the great influence of the holiday of Matan Torah, and the reading of the Ten Commandments, and we are informed that a professional committee in the Ministry of Education has determined that, starting from the upcoming school year, the theory of evolution will be taught in grades 8 and 9 as part of the science curriculum.
Until now, Darwinian evolutionary thought has only been taught in elective biology classes.
The new decision from the Ministry of Education encourages heresy and is contrary to the spirit of the State Education Law, which states among the goals of state education:
(1) To educate a person to be a lover of man, a lover of his people and a lover of his country, a loyal citizen of the State of Israel, who respects his parents and family, his heritage, his cultural identity and his language;
(2) To instill the principles of the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel and the values of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state and to develop a respectful attitude towards human rights, fundamental freedoms, democratic values, respect for the law, culture and views of others, as well as to educate in the pursuit of peace and tolerance in relations between people and nations;
(3) To teach the history of the Land of Israel and the State of Israel;
(4) To teach Jewish law, the history of the Jewish people, the heritage of Israel and Jewish tradition, to instill awareness of the memory of the Holocaust and heroism, and to educate to respect them;
The law also states that the purpose of education in Israel is also:
To establish the boy's and girl's knowledge in the various fields of knowledge and science, in human creation throughout its history and generations, and in the basic skills that will be required of them in their lives as adult human beings in a free society, and to encourage physical activity and leisure culture.
If up until now, the framework for choosing to study the theory of evolution in high school, as has been customary up until now, met the above criteria, the change that the Ministry of Education, under the leadership of Minister Piron, seeks to bring about has appeared - and encourages heresy and is even completely contrary to the purposes of the State Education Law.
The values of the State of Israel as a Jewish state based on the heritage of Israel and the tradition of Judaism negate the scientific findings of the theory of evolution.
Indeed, the contradictions between the theory of evolution and the Jewish tradition and heritage of Israel are fundamental and include, among other things, the most fundamental problem of purposelessness: According to the theory of evolution, all species appeared through a causal mechanism of random mutation and natural selection of the species, without the need for planning or purpose, while according to the description of the creation of the world, all species were created intentionally by G-d.
I call on the Minister of Education to prevent the change in the content of the curriculum that was introduced on this issue by all his predecessors, including Minister of Education Shulamit Aloni.
I intend to work with all my might to abolish heretical teachings for Israeli children.
