A firefighting team, under the command of Maj. Gen. Meir Bakshi, who was busy securing Lag BaOmer bonfires in the Beit Vegan neighborhood of Jerusalem, began securing a large bonfire that had begun to burn at the top.
While securing the campfire and the nearby bonfires, the team leader noticed a cat emerging from the bottom of the campfire - which was burning only at the top - carrying a small kitten in its mouth, and fleeing far away in terror.
The team leader immediately realized that there might be more little cubs hiding there, and that in a few seconds the massive fire would reach them. He He immediately ordered one of the firefighters to activate the water cannon from the fire truck, and at the same time began to spray water with a hose on the bottom of the fire and dismantle the boards, to search for more puppies.
After a few seconds, the team leader noticed five small kittens, frightened and cowering in terror, in the pile of wood. Without hesitation, with burning logs falling around him, and the partially burning fire threatening to collapse on him at any moment, the team rescued the kittens one by one.
After the fire crew finally confirmed that there were no more cats in the area, rescue operations were halted and they continued to deal with dozens of other fires in the area.
Maj. Gen. Meir Bakshi, commander of the team that rescued the kittens: "In the evening, right as the bonfires began to be lit, we were busy securing the Lag BaOmer bonfires in the Beit Vegan neighborhood. While extinguishing small brush fires that developed from the bonfires, I noticed kittens inside the Lag BaOmer bonfire that had just begun to burn at the top. My team and I pumped large amounts of water into the bonfire, and with great effort and great risk, we were able to rescue all the kittens. It is a supreme sense of satisfaction that we know that we were able to save the lives of small, helpless animals.".
