President Reuven (Rubi) Rivlin and his wife Nechama received yesterday (Monday) a document that constitutes the first evidence of the creation of the Israeli flag, which originated in Rishon LeZion in 1885.

The letter, originally written in Russian by Israel Belkind to Zeev Dubnov in 1885, describes the design and creation of a blue and white flag with a Star of David, and its hoisting in Rishon LeZion: "Me and Penny Meyerowitz were busy making a flag in the meantime. And this is the image of the flag we made, a sheet of white cloth, two strips of light blue at each end, like our tallit, and a Star of David of light blue in the middle.".

The President of the State excitedly received the copy of the historic letter and a reproduction of that flag, according to the description in the letter, from the Director of the Rishon LeZion Museum, Nava Kessler, the Curator of the Rishon LeZion Museum, Yona Shapira, and the Curator of the Israel Collection at the National Library, Hezi Amior.

The letter, which was published in 1934 and disappeared, was discovered in recent days in a private collection at the National Library.

""A letter like this and such evidence on the eve of Independence Day are certainly very moving. There is no doubt that this is very early evidence of the use of two such distinct Israeli symbols, the tallit and the Star of David.".
