43 passengers filed a financial claim for NIS 301,000 with the Rehovot Magistrate's Court against El Al, demanding compensation for a 'flight to nowhere'. This is an El Al flight on Wednesday, September 15, en route from Israel to New York, with 340 passengers. The plane's captain was forced to shut down one of its four engines due to a technical malfunction, and decided not to cross the ocean with only three engines. However, the captain chose not to make an emergency landing in Europe, and the flight returned to Israel, even though about 6 and a half hours of flight had already passed. This is how it happened that the plane, a Boeing 747-400, took off at 11:30 a.m. from Ben Gurion Airport on its way to New York, and landed back at 10:25 p.m. at Ben Gurion Airport - after an 11-hour flight. El Al said at the time: "Due to a malfunction in one of the four engines, it was decided to return the plane to land at Ben Gurion Airport. The plane is currently over Europe and is expected to make a normal landing in the evening.".
