''Where are the checks'? Olmert's people asked. 'There is no evidence' also said Professor Daniel Friedman • But it turns out there is a reason why the checks were not found • And what about the records?

Summary of previous episodes. Olmert's people claimed after the conviction: The police and the prosecution scanned all of Dechner's accounts and there were no checks issued in these amounts. Professor Daniel Friedman based his article "No Evidence" in "Yediot Aharonot" on this claim. If there were no checks issued, then there were no checks, and if there were no checks, then what does it matter what Yossi Olmert said and what Avraham Natan testified about and what version exactly Shula Zaken gave.

As you may recall, during the trial itself, Olmert's defense attorneys did not raise this claim, and during Yossi Olmert's interrogation, defense attorney Roy Belcher agreed to accept Olmert's testimony to the police that there were checks and that he had received them. Belcher narrowed the scope to the question of Ehud Olmert's awareness. In the summaries, Olmert's defense attorneys decided to open this matter as well and claim that there really were no checks. In the ruling, Judge Rosen chose to briefly confront this point by showing how strong and convincing Yossi Olmert's testimony to the police was on this point.

As you remember, me The verdict was convincing., But in all this, I went to investigate with people who were involved in the investigation and prosecution. Where are the checks, I asked them, how come there is no documentation of the withdrawal from the account.

Here's what a knowledgeable person told me:

Roy Belcher knew why he didn't sharpen the point at the trial. He knew that it wasn't a strong point. The investigation began in 2010. Banks must keep checks for seven years. During the investigation, we saw very clearly that checks from 2003 were found and checks from 2002 were not found. In Shula Zaken's story, this was really evident. She received 5 checks. Those from 2003 were found and those from 2002 were not found because they were burned by the banks. In the same way, we also found the checks that established the bribe of 60 thousand shekels because they were checks from 2004. Yossi Olmert's story happened in 2002, so it is clear that the checks themselves are not there.

What about the records?

I asked the same source – O.K., the checks themselves are no longer there, but the bank records, which document outgoing and incoming, are still there. Is there a series of consecutive checks that are deposited on the same date in amounts similar to those specified by Decner and Yossi Olmert (50 thousand shekels, 80 thousand shekels)?

True, the source confirmed. The records are there, and there is no consecutive series of 8 or 10 checks in large amounts, which are deposited at the same time, but you need to understand a few things: Dechner rolled checks from place to place. This is a pattern of action that is repeated in this case a lot.

Furthermore, he had at least 18 different accounts from which he operated, and we know that Yossi Olmert would also forward the checks he received to all his various creditors. Therefore, it is difficult to find a match between the outgoing checks from one of Decner's accounts and the incoming checks from Yossi Olmert. Yossi said during his interrogation with the police that he would take from one place and transfer to another. Another thing - Decner said that he would give checks from different ledgers. He could give 2 checks from one ledger and 3 from another ledger. We did find in 2002 in his accounts here and there a sequence of several checks in such amounts that they were issued at the same time, but we did not find a sequence of 6 or 10 checks for the same amount. It is certainly possible that he gave 3 from one account on a certain date, 2 from another account on a different date, and a few more from a third account.

Finally, there is no way Yossi would have confirmed in his interrogation the exact same situation of receiving the checks, including the details provided, unless it happened. The coffee shop thing, the number of checks, the meeting, etc., is exactly the same as Dechner's testimony.

From now on, you will judge for yourself.
