The attacks by radio hosts Nathan Zehavi and Gabi Gazit against the campaign calling for mezuzahs to be checked using the Mezuzon app do not leave the political system indifferent.
Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri, Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben Dahan, and Deputy Education Minister Meir Porush launched an attack against Zehavi.
In a post that Deri posted on the social network Facebook, the Minister of Economy wrote: "I heard with pain about the slanderous words of broadcaster Nathan Zehavi about the mezuzah. The mezuzah is what has protected us throughout all generations and distinguished our doors from the doors of the Gentiles around us. It is what has protected us and distinguished us in all the disturbances we have known.".
According to Deri, thanks to the mezuzah, the promise "Eternal Israel will not lie" was fulfilled in us.
""Today, we will talk about it specifically? How much we need a mezuzah these days that will protect our soldiers and commanders in the enemy field, our women and children on the streets of our city, our children in educational institutions.".
Deri called on Zehavi to retract his remarks: "The mezuzah is not a piece of plastic, it is the soul of the people of Israel. It is what guards and saves us at every given moment in these turbulent days when outside a sword will strike and terror will penetrate. It is what will shelter us and protect us from all trouble.".
Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben Dahan also posted on Facebook in which he wrote: "It's a shame that there are those who don't accept the results of the last elections in which the public chose the Israeli tradition and those who kiss the mezuzah. We will continue to kiss the mezuzah with pride.".
Radio hosts Nathan Zehavi and Gabi Gazit attacked Culture Minister Miri Regev and MK Eitan Cabel yesterday (Thursday) for their participation in a campaign calling for the inspection of mezuzahs.
Zehavi said: "There is no limit to their stupidity. What will all those religious and ultra-Orthodox people say who went to the train station and were murdered, the mezuzah was not tied, the parchment was not kosher?
""Are you stupid? If someone kisses a mezuzah and a terrorist comes to him and wants to murder him, he won't want to murder him because he kissed a mezuzah when he left the house...""
Zehavi continued by attacking Minister Miri Regev and MK Eitan Cabel: "The two Knesset members explain - for me, a mezuzah is first and foremost a protection, a safeguard, a Jewish home that the Holy One, blessed be He, protects this home. Tell me, do you remember the murder in the synagogue in Jerusalem? The Holy One, blessed be He, protected the synagogue? He protected Joseph's tomb from arsonists? The Holy One, blessed be He, protected the Fogel family who was slaughtered in their home? And then they tell you that you are primitive, you get angry.".
Radio host Gabi Gazit opened his program with cynical disdain for the initiative, saying that he understood that every time he didn't feel well, it was because he didn't kiss the mezuzah.
