Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who serves as acting Minister of Communications, fired Communications Ministry Director General Avi Berger this evening (Sunday) via phone call.

Globes reported that the two candidates to replace him are Attorney Eitan Tzafrir, who served as chief of staff at the Communications Ministry on behalf of Netanyahu, and Shlomo (Momo) Filber, former head of Netanyahu's office.

The person who appointed Avi Berger, who previously served as Partner's VP of Engineering, to the position of CEO was outgoing Communications Minister Gilad Erdan.

During Berger's term under Erdan, he led a series of reforms in the Israeli communications market, including broadband reform, fourth-generation cellular tenders, and the unification of cellular networks.

The one who could benefit from Berger's firing is Bezeq, owned by Shaul Elovitch. Berger promoted the broadband reform that could significantly harm Bezeq.
