Bear hug: A 55-year-old woman is fighting for her life in a hospital after being mauled by a bear in a forest in Russia.

The woman, Natalia Pasternak, was walking in the forest with friends when a bear pounced on her, attacked her, and after mortally wounding her, buried her under soil and leaves.

The police who arrived at the scene found Pasternak in a shocking condition, with only her arms sticking out through the leaves and ground.

The Mirror website, which reported on the incident, chose not to upload the image it received, due to its graphic nature.

""The bear buried the poor woman to save her for the next meal," the Mirror quoted local police sources as saying.

The police were forced to confront the bear, which tried to attack them as well, and shot it.

Pasternak was pulled from the "pit" in deep shock. "Did you manage to kill the bear?" was her first question. She is now hospitalized in critical condition in a hospital in eastern Russia.
