The Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi David Lau, turned the day after the election to Cabinet Secretary Avichai Mandelblit, asking him to work to regulate the issue of the sale of chametz in the State of Israel.

Rabbi Lau pointed out to Mandelblit that the State of Israel does not have a Minister of Finance, and therefore there is no one authorized to sell chametz on behalf of the state, as stipulated by law.

In his letter, Rabbi Lau asked Mandelblit that the government authorize the chief rabbis to sell chametz on behalf of the state, in the absence of a Minister of Finance authorized to do so.

However, yesterday the government decided to appoint Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to fill the positions of all ministers in the ministries that remain without portfolios, for the period during which the current government serves as a transitional government.

In light of this, it was determined that the Chief Rabbis will arrive on Passover Eve at the Prime Minister's Office, where the sale will take place.
