The groom forgot something, and not necessarily the ring: The Jerusalem Religious Council was surprised to discover this week that a man who was supposed to get married that day had not informed the Rabbinate that he was in fact already... married.
The drama unfolded on Tuesday afternoon, when a woman entered the marriage department in Jerusalem and complained to the local rabbis that her husband was getting married to another woman that evening.
The woman explained to the rabbis that if they allowed him to marry, he would keep her agunah forever.
""When I was 17, I married him in a pirate wedding, without the approval of the rabbinate, but according to Jewish law. The marriage was fruitless and to this day I have not received a divorce from him - and today I found out that he is getting married," the woman said.
To prove her point, the woman presented a video from the previous wedding, and the rabbis, convinced, began to act to thwart the wedding.
Contact was soon made with the groom, who initially denied that he was married.
However, after it was made clear to him that he would not be able to get married that day, the groom agreed to grant the woman a divorce before sunset.
In an expedited procedure, the divorce was granted, and the groom, now single, received a marriage license that very evening.
