50 years ago we didn't receive budgets for yeshivas, today we do • 50 years ago we didn't enter a coalition, today we have a deputy minister with the status of a minister • In 50 years we will be past this unnecessary polemic

Following the elections, as if according to a predetermined script, the issue of "the status of Haredi women in Israeli public life" has once again been raised with great fanfare. Women and men are responding in articles. And the division is not only along the lines expected by gender - men against or women in favor. Everyone has an opinion here, even though it is a halakhic or ideological question that depends on the situation and time.

Yes, I am assuming that in fifty years (if we don't achieve redemption by then) Haredi women will serve in the Knesset on behalf of Haredi parties. Period.

It doesn't matter if we are for or against, processes are happening, and no one, including the 'Tsalmar' in Motka's taunts with his threats, can stop the processes. Maybe just slow them down.

Neturi Karta and the Haredi community have been shouting and protesting on a variety of issues for years. Has it helped them?

Fifty years ago

We didn't receive budgets from the state, until 1977 everyone knew that it was forbidden to receive budgets. Today, that's almost the only reason we send representatives to the Knesset. Take away the issue of budgets and put it in the law book, you almost killed our Knesset members.

The great gaon, Rosh Yeshiva of Ponovizh, Rabbi Berel Povarsky, said in an interview that in 1937 (with Begin's election) they barely approved receiving 45 percent of aid from the yeshiva budget, and the gadols then determined that it was forbidden to receive more. And why? To prevent any ability of the government to control the Haredi educational institutions. The rabbis added that the institutions' "shnur system" must operate at full strength, in order to be prepared for a situation in which the government threatens to provide budgets.

Everyone knew that it was forbidden to enter a coalition because by doing so, one "bears responsibility" and today how do we feel when we did not enter a coalition, a government and its leader who does not include the Haredim, immediately earns the coveted title of "government of destruction" and the like.

Everyone knows that it is forbidden to be a minister. Today we are already at the stage of "a deputy minister in the position of a minister without a minister above him." For those who have difficulty, Rashi's interpretation is: If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, then it is probably a duck... Oh well (it is interesting that Rabbi Levin served as minister when the state was founded).

Fifty years ago...

We can go on and on, women did not work, did not learn a profession, did not support their husbands who live in the kollel, women and men did not study at the academy, and many other things that did not exist fifty years ago. Only ten years ago, they banned having a cell phone with text messages, and today some of those who ban smartphones are already "kosher.".

Nearly a hundred years ago

Even before the establishment of the state, in the first elections for the "Assembly of the Deputies, the Knesset of Israel," all the rabbis, including Rabbi Kook, ruled that women were not allowed to vote and be elected, and what's more, men were also not allowed to vote where women had the right to vote and be elected, and only the Sephardic rabbi, Rabbi Uziel, permitted it. What brought about the change is unclear. What is clear to us is that after about 30 years with the establishment of the state, the rabbis, including the Haredim, ruled that everyone, including women, must vote even if women are elected to the Knesset.
