MK Meir Porush addressed today (Monday), in a speech in the Knesset plenum, the dramatic letter sent today by the chairman of the Local Authorities Forum, Beitar Illit Mayor Meir Rubinstein, to the Police Commissioner, in which he announced the cessation of cooperation between the Haredi authorities and the police due to the persecution of Torah scholars.
""Today, nine heads of authorities in the State of Israel placed a bright red sign in front of the Inspector General of the Israel Police. A sign with a clear warning: You, the Commissioner of Police, are leading to anarchy. The Forum of Heads of Haredi Authorities, headed by the Mayor of Beitar Illit, Rabbi Meir Rubinstein, sent a letter to the Commissioner in which they write to him that they will have no choice but to cancel all cooperation with the police.".
Porush admitted: "This is not an easy decision, and the heads of the authorities are well aware of the heavy consequences. But when the police have effectively become an executive arm of the notorious Ombudsman, an official who decided to start a fire and trample on any informed consent, we have no choice but to fight back.
""The reality in which Israeli police, instead of fighting the rising crime on the streets, are busy hunting down yeshiva students - young men and boys whose only sin is studying Torah - is a distorted reality that has no place in a reformed country.
""In a country controlled by Jews, the police have made themselves the enemy of an entire public, because they are, so to speak, a public of over a million people over the age of 18, and in doing so, they are erasing decades of coordinated work, of routine life, and of basic trust that was an asset to all of us. Our message today to the Commissioner is clear and unequivocal: The responsibility for dismantling the way things are conducted rests solely on your shoulders.".
""There is a final ultimatum here: if these arrests are not stopped immediately, if you do not cease this persecution that is leading the country to complete anarchy - we will not leave you with a hold on our communities. The Haredi public will not remain silent while their sons are being persecuted, and will not submit reports to the police who have lost their trust and legitimacy.".
""Honorable Commissioner, coming to your senses is your immediate duty. Before it is too late to turn back the clock.".
