The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court ruled, as part of a settlement agreement, that an Arab who attacked two young Haredi men with pepper spray in Jerusalem about two years ago will compensate them with 16,000 shekels.
After the attack, the Arab was arrested and sentenced to seven months in prison and to pay 3,000 shekels in compensation to the victims of the crime. After his conviction, attorney Haim Bleicher of Mehonu filed a civil lawsuit against him for 160,000 shekels.
The indictment filed against the Arab describes the serious assault: "The plaintiffs, dressed in Haredi clothing, were walking down Mule Drivers Street. At the same time, the defendant and three of his friends were also walking. Following this, one of the group members asked the plaintiffs, 'What time is it?'"
""The plaintiffs were stopped in order to answer the question, when suddenly the defendant pulled out pepper spray and sprayed it in the plaintiffs' faces, all for racial reasons.".
""As a result of the defendant's actions, the plaintiffs suffered pain, redness, and burning in their eyes. In his actions described above, the defendant attacked the plaintiffs with racial and religious motives.".
Attorney Bleicher welcomed the court's decision: "Although the settlement agreements do not exhaust the high threshold that should be set, they usually guarantee that the money will actually be paid. Compensating those attacked is justice and also serves as a real deterrent. More and more potential offenders understand that there is a price for anti-Semitic attacks.".
