Dramatic decision Of the police: After months in which the police avoided detaining Haredi "evasive" people, Police Commissioner Danny Levy today (Monday) ordered a change in policy.

Is 100,000 NIS right for you before Shavuot? Last hours for the big lottery!

According to a report by Liran Tamari on the Ynet website, the Commissioner instructed today (Monday), in a discussion held by the police's general command staff, that from now on, any deserter a police officer encounters will be detained immediately, a report will be forwarded to the military police, and he will later be transferred to the care of military officials.

The Commissioner said in the hearing: "Any deserter we encounter will be detained, a report will be forwarded to the military police, and he will be transferred to the military police for further processing.".

The police spokeswoman clarified the instruction: "Following inquiries from reporters regarding the issue of detaining deserters - we will clarify the instruction of Police Commissioner Lt. Col. Danny Levy, which was given at the beginning of the month and today was forwarded to the National General Command staff:

""During a random encounter between a police officer and a deserter, the police officer will detain the deserter, report to the military police, and wait with the detainee until a representative of the Military Police Force arrives, who is required to arrive within 30 minutes of the report.

""If the military police representative does not arrive, the deserter will be released and the policeman will give him a summons to report to the military police.".

The Commissioner's decision comes after the police have so far refrained from arresting ultra-Orthodox defectors, and even gave instructions to the various districts "not to mess with it.".

The activity to arrest ultra-Orthodox Jews who are defined as "defectors" was frozen during the war with Iran. Last month, IDF officials said that there is no proactive enforcement activity against deserters, due to the fact that the police are not working to accompany the arrests and are refraining from cooperating with the army.

The same sources said at the time: "The army cannot operate in a civilian space without coordination with the police. The refusal of the Israel Police to coordinate with us on this issue does not allow enforcement.".

The Shas faction responded to the commissioner's decision: "At a time when acts of violence and crime are on the rise and murderers roam the streets freely, instead of the police properly handling national security, they decide to divert resources to pursue precious Torah scholars as the last of the criminals. It is a shame that this is happening in the Jewish state!"

""Mr. Commissioner, do not fall into the political trap led by the Attorney General and her team, whose sole goal is to overthrow the government. Do not reach out to the yeshiva students and Torah scholars!""

Degel Hatorah Chairman MK Moshe Gafni: "To what extent will the Ombudsman degrade Israeli society to the depths of the abyss, and the Commissioner-General will be forced to confront Torah students, even if it is for his own glory.".

MK Yaakov Margi of Shas said in response: "A legal advisor to the government who thwarts the head of the Mossad seeks to thwart Torah scholars. What is not clear? This is about the chairman of the opposition, not the government - but the state - acting as Kaplan's branch in the Ministry of Justice.".
