United States President Donald Trump announced last night (Monday) the start of Operation 'Project Freedom', which will rescue ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.

The operation, which will launch in the morning, is intended to rescue dozens of merchant ships from various countries that were stranded in the strategic waterway following security tensions and Iranian bombing.

Trump claimed that this was a "humanitarian gesture on behalf of the United States," as "many of these ships are running out of food, and everything else needed for large crews to remain on board in a healthy and sanitary manner.".

Trump threatened that "if this humanitarian process is disrupted, we will deal with it forcefully.".

Here is the president's full post:

""Countries from all over the world, almost all of which are not involved in the Middle East conflict that is being waged in such a transparent and violent manner in front of everyone, have asked the United States if we can help free their ships, stuck in the Strait of Hormuz, in something they have nothing to do with - they are simply neutral and innocent bystanders!"

For the benefit of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these countries that we will escort their ships safely out of these restricted shipping lanes, so that they can freely and successfully continue their business.

Again, these are ships from parts of the world that are not involved in any way in what is happening in the Middle East right now. I have told my representatives to let them know that we will do our utmost to get their ships and crews safely out of the Strait.

In all cases, they said they would not return until the area was safe for navigation. This process, Project Freedom, will begin Monday morning, Middle Eastern time.

I am fully aware that my representatives are having very positive discussions with the State of Iran, and that these discussions can lead to something very positive for everyone. The movement of ships is solely intended to free people, companies and countries who have done nothing wrong - they are victims of circumstance.

This is a humanitarian gesture on behalf of the United States. Many of these ships are running out of food, and everything else needed for large crews to remain healthy and sanitary on board.

"I think it will go a long way in showing goodwill on behalf of all those who have fought so hard in recent months. If, in any way, this humanitarian process is disrupted, unfortunately, that disruption will have to be dealt with by force.".
