The State Attorney's Office filed an indictment today (Wednesday) in the Beer Sheva District Court against Wasaf Abu Amar, 28, from Lakia, after he stole a heavy machine gun from an IDF post.

The indictment, filed by Attorney Assaf Bar Yosef, of the Southern District Attorney's Office, indicates that at the beginning of the month, Abu Amar arrived with another person, with the aim of stealing weapons from an IDF post near Kibbutz Kerem Shalom.

Upon their arrival, Abu Amar climbed onto one of the tanks parked in the compound and removed a heavy machine gun from it. Abu Amar then carried the weapon away, but when he noticed that his partner had left the scene with the vehicle, he hid the machine gun nearby.

He then went to the post and asked for assistance from the soldiers, who suspected him and called the police.

The police arrived at the scene, identified Abu Amar, and helped him call his relative. He later left the scene, and in the early morning hours, returned to the hiding place, collected the weapon, and took it to Laqiya, where it was hidden with another person.

The day after the incident, Abu Amar suggested to his relative who had picked him up that he come see the weapons - but he refused.

Two days after the incident, the machine gun was returned to the security forces.

In his request for detention until the end of the proceedings, Attorney Bar Yosef noted that although, unfortunately, thefts of any weapon from military bases are a well-known phenomenon, this time the defendant showed courage and stole an offensive weapon with enormous firepower - a machine gun that fires bullets capable of penetrating armored vehicles and at a rate of fire of over a hundred bullets per minute.

As we know, illegal weapons may end up in the hands of criminal elements and criminal organizations, and as we have seen more than once recently – even into the hands of those who seek to harm the State of Israel.

The defendant is charged with theft, carrying and transporting a weapon, possession of a weapon, and obstruction of justice, after breaking two telephones in his possession.
