Firefighters from the Ha'Uma area station in Jerusalem were called this evening (Wednesday) to the light rail construction site on Yehezkel Street, near the Bar Ilan intersection in the city.
The call was received following a report of a guard post being set on fire - a butte - during a violent disturbance by extremists that occurred at the scene.
Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters identified that the structure was engulfed in flames. The crews acted quickly and decisively to control the flames and finally extinguish them, thereby preventing the fire from spreading to engineering tools and other infrastructure within the work area.
As a result of the arson, severe damage was caused to the outpost structure.
Firefighters note that this arson incident joins a series of arson incidents and riots at light rail infrastructure complexes in the area in recent times.
Commander of the Ha'uma Area Station, Lieutenant Commander Shai Nehemiah: "We are witnessing a serious and dangerous phenomenon of deliberate damage and arson in the light rail complexes. It is important to emphasize that beyond the heavy damage to property, any incident of open fire in the heart of a dense urban environment may get out of control and pose a real danger to human life. Firefighters will continue to act quickly to ensure the public's peace and safety.""
