Abu Khalil was among three members of the terrorist organization Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine who attempted to hijack an El Al airliner at the Athens airport in 1969, in order to force Israel to release Palestinian terrorists and Israeli Arabs from prison as part of a deal.
The plan was exposed and failed. Abu Khalil was put on trial with two of her organization members in Greece, but was released in 1970 as part of a prisoner exchange deal between Israel and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, after another Greek plane was successfully hijacked.
