First blink? United States President Donald Trump is reluctant to resume bombing Iran and hopes that the blockade will replace the war.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, President Trump asked his advisers whether the US should resume the strikes - but was deterred by the war's unpopularity among the American public.

Ultimately, the administration chose to "maintain unlimited pressure" on Iran until Tehran submitted a concrete proposal.

The report comes after the president attacked the American daily last night, in a rant he posted on his social media, claiming that it had "lost its way!".

The president wrote: "Some idiot on the Wall Street Journal staff, named Elliot Kaufman, wrote an op-ed titled 'Iranians Treat Trump Like a Sucker.'.

""Really? For 47 years they have killed our people and many others, and have spared every president except me. And what have I given them? A ruined country! Their entire fleet is at the bottom of the sea, their air force is gone, their anti-aircraft and radar systems have been destroyed, their nuclear laboratories and storage sites were completely destroyed one dark June evening by our mighty B-2 bombers, their leaders are dead, including General Qassem Soleimani, the evil mastermind who destroyed the lives of many with roadside bombs, the Strait of Hormuz is blocked and completely controlled by the US, with no ships able to reach Iranian ports.".

The president added: "They are said to be losing $500 million a day because of this. Their country is an economic disaster hanging by a thread.".

""Barack Hussein Obama gave them $1.7 billion in 'green' cash, flown to their leaders on a Boeing 757, and hundreds of billions more to help them move toward a nuclear bomb. Other presidents did nothing to stop them, a stain on the institution of the presidency! But despite all that, I have a fool on the Wall Street Journal staff who writes that I am a 'sucker.'".

""Iran doesn't think so, and neither does anyone else. I guess Rupert Murdoch told him to write that, because the Wall Street Journal has lost its way, no longer a must-read, another failed political newspaper!""
