Naftali Bennett stated today (Monday) in an interview on the Galei Tzahal radio station that he supports public transportation on Shabbat and civil marriage.
""Until every Israeli can get where they need to go, I think we need to let each city decide on the character. For example, in an ultra-Orthodox city like Bnei Brak there will be no public transportation, and in a city like Tel Aviv it will be decided that there will be public transportation, that is respectful," he said.
On civil marriage, he said: "Every person in Israel should be able to realize their love in the country and not have to travel abroad. I support marriage for anyone who wants it. My compass in this matter is common sense and decency.".
The chairman of the 'Democrats', Yair Golan, tweeted in response: "Bennett, welcome. Civil marriage in a liberal democratic state is a must. This is our Judaism and we will demand it in the basic guidelines of the next government. You've come a long way from the Jewish Home to this point. It's good to see that even in politics there are positive surprises and that even on the right understand that only a strong liberal Israel will win.".
He added: "I hope Bennett's journey will continue one more step towards the necessary understanding that diplomatic moves, a departure from annexation fantasies, and courageous decisions are also the right and only path to true security.".
The Shas party responded: "Anyone who, for the sake of politics, is willing to sell the Jewish identity of the state - the holy Sabbath and marriage according to the law of Moses and Israel - will not be far behind today and will also sell the Land of Israel and the settlements in Judea and Samaria.".
Bennett's former party member, Minister Idit Silman, addressed left-wing voters: "Registration for Bennett's next sting has opened, this time you are the ones standing in line.".
