US President Donald Trump harshly criticized New York Mayor Zohar Mammadani last night (Friday night) - and spoke out against his economic policy.

At a political event that dealt with his administration's tax policy, Trump said: "Look at New York, he's a nice guy, he calls me all the time to say hello, but his policies are not good. He's driving people out, and causing a lot of harm to everyone. Everyone's taxes are skyrocketing.".

Even before the event, Trump published a post on his social network Truth Social, in which he directly attacked the mayor's policies: "Unfortunately, Mayor Mammadani is destroying New York. It has no chance. The US should not contribute to its failure, and it will only get worse.".

He added a focused criticism of the tax policy: "The 'tax, tax, tax' policy is completely wrong. People are running away. They have to change direction and fast." Trump emphasized: "History has proven that these things simply don't work.".

Israel Hayom's US correspondent Or Shaked reported that the worsening tone comes against the backdrop of Mamdani's promotion of economic initiatives, primarily a proposal to impose a tax on secondary luxury apartments worth over $5 million. According to estimates, the tax is expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars a year, but such measures harm investment incentives and could accelerate capital flight from the city.

The Israel Hayom reporter noted that Trump's remarks mark a public break with the conciliatory line he took in the first months of Mamdani's term. He said that although no changes in the administration's policy toward the municipality have been announced so far, the political message is clear.
