Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloni announced today (Tuesday) at an event in Verona the suspension of the automatic renewal of Italy's defense agreement with Israel.
Maloney added that she decided to postpone "in light of the current situation.".
The defense agreement between the countries includes exchanges in the areas of military equipment and technological research, which will cease with its current validity and will not be automatically renewed.
The Foreign Ministry responded to the announcement: "We do not have a 'security agreement' with them. This is a memorandum of understanding from many years ago that never had any real content. It will not harm Israel's security.".
Maloney met with Netanyahu in October 2018 after the massacre - and is considered a central right-wing figure in Europe. Her decision comes as criticism of Israel's conduct has been mounting in Italy.
This is a continuation of the change in policy in Rome towards Israel, after in September last year, Maloney announced from the podium at the UN General Assembly that she would support some of the European Union's sanctions on Israel. During her speech at the UN, she severely criticized Israel for its strong response against Hamas.
