Minister of Transportation, Miri Regev, spoke today (Tuesday) at the annual public transportation conference in Eilat about promoting stricter punishment for traffic offenses - as part of the policy to combat road accidents in Israel.
According to her, 80% of road accidents are caused by the human factor, with 60% of them being caused by drivers from the Arab sector. "Punishment and enforcement are not under the Ministry of Transportation, but we are working for change," Regev said.
Unlike countries like Dubai, where there is strict enforcement, including high fines and confiscation of vehicles, in Israel a gradual move will be decided.
In this framework, the offense of using a mobile phone while driving will result in a fine of 5,000 shekels. Further fines and even confiscation of vehicles and revocation of licenses are expected.
Regev noted that seven offenses were selected for the new measure, which still requires approval from several parties.
