In preparation for the days of Hanukkah: Israel Fire and Rescue would like to remind you of the precautions that must be taken to prevent disasters.

Senior Firefighter Tal Wolbovitz, spokesperson for the Israel Fire and Rescue Service: "Every year during the days of Hanukkah, we unfortunately encounter numerous fire incidents and sometimes even disasters. God forbid, adhering to a few important rules will allow us to spend Hanukkah happily and peacefully":

Safe location:

  • The menorah should be lit in a stable place, away from flammable materials such as curtains, papers, or furniture. It is recommended to place the menorah on a fireproof surface, such as a metal or ceramic tray.
  • Close supervision: Do not leave a lit menorah unattended. It is recommended that children only light candles when accompanied by an adult.
  • Safe materials: Use quality candles or appropriate oil to prevent leaks that could cause fires, and do not allow children to light menorahs made from flammable materials.

Frying pancakes and donuts:

  • Safe frying: Use a deep pot or pan to prevent oil from splashing. Do not fill the pot with too much oil.
  • Keep children away: It is important to keep children away from the area while frying. Use pan handles that face inward.
  • Extinguishing Burning Oil: In the event of a fire, cover the pot with a lid or fireproof blanket. Do not pour water on burning oil!

Playing around fire:

  • Keeping children away from matches and lighters: Keep matches and lighters in a high place and out of reach of children.
  • Do not allow children to play near the menorahs when the candles are lit.

Preparations for extinguishing:

Available firefighting equipment: It is recommended to have a fire extinguisher available at home. You can prepare a bucket of water or a damp towel for emergencies.

Smoke detector:

It is highly recommended to install a smoke detector in your home. Installation is simple, the cost is low, and it saves lives!

Emergency numbers:

In the event of a fire or danger, immediately call the Israeli Fire and Rescue hotline 102.
