In an official ceremony at the German Air Force base near Berlin, the Ministry of Defense today (Wednesday) delivered the first operational system of the 'Arrow 3' system to the German army.
This is a key stage in the implementation of the largest defense export deal in Israeli history, which was signed between the countries about two years ago.
The system, jointly developed by the "Wall" directorate at the Israel Defense Forces and the American Missile Defense Agency (MDA), is intended to protect German skies from ballistic threats.
The Director General of the Ministry of Defense, Maj. Gen. Amir Baram, did not hide his excitement at the ceremony: "I, a second generation Holocaust survivor, stand here deeply moved, because a ballistic missile defense system, developed by the best Jewish minds in the Israeli Aerospace Industries, is about to assist in the defense of Germany.
""We Israelis, descendants of Holocaust survivors, want to see a strong and prosperous Germany, proud and leading, in Europe and throughout the world. We are full of appreciation that Israeli systems are part of Germany's renewed military power building. With today's delivery, Israel and Germany mark only the beginning. Our cooperation will increase and deepen - whether in the air, on land or in space.".
Baram also referred to the lifting of the German embargo on Israel, saying: "I welcome the decision to lift the arms embargo on various security components. Such an embargo should not have been imposed against an ally of Germany, which is fighting murderous Islamist terrorism - whether it comes from the ayatollah regime in Iran or from Hamas in Gaza. When Israel acts against nuclear threats, ballistic missiles and terrorism, we are not only protecting ourselves - we are protecting the entire Western world. We are doing the hard, sometimes 'dirty' work that the entire world should have done. We will not allow new threats to emerge!""
Israeli Ambassador to Germany, Ron Proshor: "This year we celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between Israel and Germany. Our partnership is strategic and Germany is the most important country for Israel in Europe. Today we mark another milestone in this relationship.
""Who would have believed that 80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, the Jewish state, through the technologies it is developing, would help protect not only Germany but all of Europe. My family members, who fled Germany on the eve of the Holocaust, would never have imagined this.".
