The morning after the dramatic announcement of the signing of the hostage deal: News 12 commentator Amit Segal addressed the central question that Israel will face the day after today (Thursday) on News 12 - and warned against illusions regarding "Phase 2" of the deal.

He emphasized that the deal reached in Egypt between Israel and Hamas focuses on the release of hostages and a ceasefire and does not guarantee the weakening of the terrorist organization.

""There is no second phase, that's clear to everyone. The deal that was signed now is a hostage deal and does not reflect anything that will happen later. It is possible that the collection of fantasies that the Emiratis will dismantle the tunnels and an international body will be established and Tony Blair will be governor of Gaza - will happen, but that is not mentioned in the current agreement, which was a tactical negotiation," Segal said.

At the same time, he also expressed reservations about the rhetoric of Israeli officials talking about "peace": "When I hear people say that peace is made with enemies and that, I have a whiff of Oslo in the air. This is not peace, and these are bitter enemies.".

He added: "Currently, there is a ceasefire that continues as long as negotiations between the parties are conducted in good faith. It must be said that to this day, during Trump's tenure, when there were no negotiations, Israel returned to fighting.".

""Ultimately, I don't think that in the near future we will see IDF armored columns rushing into Gaza like what happened in the last two ceasefires.".

""The question is whether the IDF remains behind the international border line and attacks from the air when it detects intensification or attempts to harm it. That is what the State of Israel is striving for. The reasonable assumption is that this will be approved by US President Donald Trump.".

He concluded: "The IDF is withdrawing to line 53%. When the hostages are released, the negotiations after the release of the hostages are on the principle of withdrawal in exchange for the demilitarization of the Strip. Since it is estimated that Hamas will not agree to this and will not disband of its own accord, there is still a very long road to peace.".
