Democratic Party Chairman Yair Golan said today (Tuesday) that if he is part of the next government, he will work to remove the new Shin Bet head, David Zini, from his position.

In an interview with Galei Tzahal, Golan said that he intends to fight to dismiss as many appointments of the current government as possible. "This government appoints problematic people to the public service. We will have to clean up the public service and place worthy people in the positions that are decisive for the fate of the State of Israel who do their job without bias," Golan claimed.
He added: "We will be fully engaged in cleaning up the public service after this government, unfortunately, has actually seriously damaged it. This includes sending home anyone who does not feel respect and is not loyal to the democratic rules of the State of Israel - including David Zini - unequivocally.".
The interviewers wondered if he realized that his words sounded like an intention to conduct a "political purge campaign" immediately after the elections.
Golan claimed in response: "Anyone who supports a thriving, flourishing, and breathing democracy should understand that democracy needs to protect itself. The fact that anti-democratic elements are exploiting democratic rules to harm democracy, and this is what has been happening here since January 2023, should bring sobriety to all democratic elements. We must fight for democracy. We have a tremendous task - to save democratic Israel.".
MK Benny Gantz attacked Golan: "What kind of amendment exactly are we proposing? How can we say that we will establish another, better government here, and in the same breath threaten the heads of the security organizations and the gatekeepers and behave exactly like what we want to replace, before they even took office?" Gantz wondered.
He added: "Yair, like you, I have very strong criticism of the process of appointing Zini, but from the moment he is elected, he is the head of the General Security Service of the State of Israel, mine and yours. His success is the success of all of us and we must in no way tarnish him before he takes office. Leave the security of the state out of politics.".
