Amit Segal, Channel 12's political commentator, addressed today (Sunday) Naftali Bennett's unusual announcement about elements working to postpone the elections - a claim that was called a "conspiracy" on social media.
According to Segal, behind Bennett's announcement is the desire to convey his seniority in the fight against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
""The target of the tweet is not Netanyahu, but also the other parties in the bloc," Segal wrote.
Segal added and noted: "Yesterday, Lapid tried to take over the leadership of the opposition when he formed a NATO alliance of four opposition parties. Bennett, by adopting the claim of danger to holding the elections and sending a 'letter of reinforcement,' is trying to broadcast: I will steer.".
His comments refer to last night's announcement by the leaders of the opposition parties - Yair Lapid, Avigdor Lieberman, Gadi Eisenkot and Yair Golan - who agreed to make the party leaders' forum a permanent framework, and expressed hope that Bennett and Benny Gantz, who were absent yesterday, will join the next meetings.
Earlier today, Bennett issued a statement in which he claimed: "Countless people have asked me whether the elections will even take place. Let me be clear: We will not allow anyone to postpone or disrupt the elections. We are for it. Postponing elections can only occur with a majority of 80 Knesset members, and there are none.".
""On this occasion," Bennett continued, "I appeal to all heads of security services, police officers, public servants, judges, members of the election committee: Continue to uphold the law and the country. I am aware of the enormous system of pressure being exerted on you. It is not easy, but do not agree to break the law or bend the rules because of political pressure.".
He added: "You will not forgive yourselves for deviating from the law; you are responsible for your actions. There is a tomorrow. Do not be afraid. Soon the current government will be replaced.".
