A heated confrontation developed at the last Bnei Brak City Council meeting, between Yaakov Wider, a member of the City Council and chairman of the Likud in the city, and Menachem Carmel, a representative of the Jerusalem faction.

Carmel called the IDF soldiers a "missionary" and even claimed that the municipality's rental of a building on the outskirts of the city to the IDF is a "national day of mourning.".

Vider was furious at the remarks and interrupted him: "Shame on you - shocking things were said here that should not be heard from a person living in the State of Israel. You will not call IDF soldiers a mission! They also protect you from the rioters and murderers. You are here thanks to IDF soldiers.".

Later, Vider added: "IDF soldiers protect us - and I will protect IDF soldiers. In the name of what Judaism is there anyone who dares to slander the soldiers who are risking their lives to protect all of us?!""

During the confrontation, representatives of Shas and United Torah Judaism, who were present at the discussion, chose to remain silent and not intervene, despite the harsh words of the representative of the "fragment" against the IDF.

This is not the first time that a sharp confrontation has occurred between Yaakov Wider, a Likud representative, and representatives of the "split" on the IDF - even though officially the two parties sit together in opposition, and even share a booth next to each other in the city hall building.
