Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar will depart today (Tuesday) for a diplomatic visit to Africa, during which he will open an Israeli embassy in Lusaka - the capital of Zambia.
During his visit to Zambia, Minister Saar will meet with the President of the African country, Hcainda Hichilema, Zambia's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Hiyembe, and the Speaker of Parliament, Nellie Moeti.
The opening ceremony of the Israeli embassy in Zambia is expected to take place tomorrow.
Also, during the visit, a series of steps to strengthen bilateral relations between the countries will be presented.
On his way to Zambia, the Foreign Minister will meet in Addis Ababa with the Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, Dr. Gideon Timothy - and this will be their fourth meeting since Minister Saar took office.
Israel had an embassy in Zambia in the 1960s and 1970s, which was closed as part of the trend of reducing the number of Israeli missions in Africa.
On the other hand, Zambia has had an embassy in Israel since 2015.
There is a Chabad house in the capital, Lusaka, which was established four and a half years ago by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Herzl, the Chief Rabbi of Zambia. Zambia is the 11th country in which a permanent Chabad house operates in Central Africa, joining Uganda, Angola, Ethiopia, Ghana, Congo, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya and Rwanda.
The reopening of the embassy after decades is an important step in deepening bilateral relations with Zambia and also part of a broader move to strengthen and deepen relations with countries on the African continent - one of the strategic goals that Sa'ar set for the Foreign Ministry for 2025.
