US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said today (Tuesday), during a Senate hearing, that the regime of Ahmed al-Sharaa in Syria may not last much longer and that "it could collapse within weeks.".

In addition, Rubio warned that if the regime collapses, a new all-out civil war will break out in the disintegrating country.

He said that the Syrian government is unstable and faces a wide range of challenges.

Rubio called for cooperation with al-Sharia, which just five months ago led a coalition of rebel organizations that overthrew Bashar al-Assad.

However, the Trump administration has so far avoided formal contact with al-Sharia, due to his past as the head of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a group that was once designated as an al-Qaeda affiliate and is still considered a terrorist organization by the United States. "The bad news is that the leaders of the new administration have not passed all the background checks," Rubio said. "But if we don’t reach out to them, it’s certainly not going to work.".

Rubio's statement comes about a week after US President Donald Trump met with al-Sharia in Saudi Arabia and announced the lifting of US sanctions on the country - a move that dramatically changed US policy towards Syria.

The meeting between the two was the first in 25 years between US and Syrian leaders.

At the end of the meeting, the White House clarified that Trump had asked al-Julani to join the Abraham Accords with Israel. Trump added that al-Julani would recognize Israel when the situation in Syria stabilizes.

However, Secretary of State Rubio's warning indicates that the local regime may not survive.
