History in Kiryat Yovel: For the first time, a municipal library was opened in the neighborhood for the benefit of the neighborhood's ultra-Orthodox children, who will now be able to borrow books and enjoy reading content available and free of charge within the neighborhood.
The library, which opened in a renovated building in the heart of Brazil Street in the neighborhood, was built as part of a large-scale municipal initiative led by Mayor Moshe Leon to expand Torah libraries in Jerusalem and through the Jerusalem Municipality's Library Department.
Hundreds of neighborhood children came to the library's inauguration, and representatives of the municipality handed out balloons that decorated the street with a festive atmosphere. The excited children were delighted by the fact that over 3,000 new books were purchased for the new library at a huge investment, with the municipality taking care to bind the books in a way that will ensure their durability over time.
The event was attended by Mayor Moshe Leon, Mera Datra Gaon Rabbi Aharon Wiener, Culture Portfolio Holder Rabbi David Blumenstock, Director of the Torah Culture Department Rabbi Pinchas Erlich, and Director of the Library Department Rabbi David Wiener.
The event was opened by Rabbi Wiener, who reviewed the Jerusalem Municipality's expanding library project and revealed that last year, over 900,000 book loans were made in Torah libraries throughout the city.
Mayor Moshe Leon: "As with the book, the fact that our children read books is of particular importance. The fact that the Haredi sector leads in reading books is a badge of honor for Haredi education. Reading books is not only an afternoon activity, it is also an educational matter that helps instill in our children good values, coping with difficulties, and social skills. I intend to continue leading the library revolution in Jerusalem and I can say that very soon we will inaugurate Torah libraries in both Neve Yaakov and Givat Ze'ev.".
Director of the Torah Culture Department, Rabbi Pinchas Erlich: "The library's activities are integrated into the extensive activities of Torah culture in Jerusalem and are a central anchor in creating quality leisure for the city's children. The Haredi public is breaking records in the volume of book borrowing. In an era of many technological distractions, it is a badge of honor for us that Haredi youth focus their leisure time on reading books. We will continue to provide and expand the activity for the education of our children.".
Director of the Library Department, Rabbi David Wiener: "The opening of the library in Kiryat Yuval is like the words of the Midrash: Open a door for me like the eye of a needle, and I will open a door for you like the eye of a hall. This is just the beginning. Since Mayor Moshe Leon took office, we have significantly expanded the opening of libraries to the Haredi sector, as part of a regular municipal policy of responding to the needs of Haredi youth in the neighborhoods.".
