Demonstration or insignificant gathering? A few dozen young people at the 'demonstration' organized by the 'Yerushalmi Faction' in the Mea Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem.
The protesters dragged garbage cans into the center of the road, but the police quickly dispersed the crowd.
The demonstration was organized following the arrest of yeshiva student Meir Cohen, who was forced to spend the holiday in detention. Cohen was arrested during a demonstration that followed the arrest of another yeshiva student, Eliyahu Cohen, during which, according to police, he became agitated.
Meanwhile, Eliyahu Cohen, the first detainee, was released to his home, but the other detainee, Meir Cohen, remained in custody, after refusing to commit to refraining from demonstrations.
By morning (Thursday), the streets of the ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods were covered with posters calling on the public to come out and demonstrate for the young man's release, near the "Warsaw Houses" in the Mea Shearim neighborhood. The police, who were waiting for the protesters in the Lilius parking lot on Strauss Street, were prepared with reinforced forces, and even armed themselves with a battery of photographers in response to the photographers acting on behalf of the protesters.
But then only about 20 young people were seen holding signs in their hands, dragging trash cans down the center of the road. The police quickly dispersed the crowd, and the cans were returned to their places. Among the police officers who bothered to return the trash cans to their places was Shmulik Meshi, a senior officer in the Israel Police's detective unit, who was apparently preparing for a mass demonstration.
