According to data published by the Central Bureau of Statistics, Jerusalem leads in construction starts in the first half of 2014 - with 2,100 starts.
For comparison to the largest cities in Israel: Tel Aviv is only in third place with 906 new apartments, and Haifa is only in 14th place with 308 new apartments.
This is the second year in a row that Jerusalem is the leading city in Israel in the number of housing units being built.
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat welcomed the data: "The boom in Jerusalem construction is one of the central tasks we have defined for the development of Jerusalem. In recent years, the city has been undergoing an accelerated process of renewal. We are investing heavily in construction, education and culture, and the results are visible on the ground.".
Promoting the construction of thousands of housing units in the city is important for the development of Jerusalem and is integrated with the economic and business development that we are promoting in the city's entrance district and in other areas, which will add tens of thousands of new jobs to the city and improve the quality of life in Jerusalem.".
