MKs demand discussion on power outages in Haredi concentrations on Shabbat evening

The default power outages on Saturday evening In many Haredi concentrations on Shabbat evening: The chairman of the Finance Committee, MK Moshe Gafni, announced that he intends to summon all relevant parties in order to understand the decision-making process in the matter and to prepare so that similar cases do not occur in the future.

At the same time, MK Yaakov Asher submitted an urgent proposal for the agenda, to hold a debate in the Knesset plenum on the method of decision-making and the necessary preparation for extreme weather, including backup by local production or storage facilities.

The explanatory notes for the proposal state: "Last Friday there was heavy rain across the country, which resulted in high electricity consumption. The high consumption led to malfunctions and intentional power outages.

""This situation, in which citizens find themselves in severe heat and while preparing for Saturday without electricity, requires a comprehensive discussion in the Knesset plenum on preparing for unusual weather, including backup through local electricity production or storage.".

The proposal also states that "the manner of making decisions to lower the switch and selecting the areas where there will be a power outage and the duration of the outage, as well as delivering a telephone message to residents before an initiated power outage, should be discussed.".

On the evening of last Shabbat, there were spontaneous outages across the country, mainly in many Haredi concentrations, where they were preparing for the start of Shabbat - without electricity.

Among other things, there were spontaneous power outages on central streets in Bnei Brak, Ashdod, and the city of Modi'in Illit, where the electricity was restored after the Sabbath began.
