MK Ram Ben Barak of the Yesh Atid party gave a speech in the Knesset plenum this evening (Monday) - and compared the elected Israeli government to Nazi Germany.
""This is a sad day. You may not be aware of what is happening, but we are becoming more divided. The State of Israel is losing, we are in chaos. Hundreds of thousands of people are taking to the streets, telling you to stop this crazy legislation.".
After accusing others of division, Ben Barak became agitated: "Do you think we would be willing to live under your dictatorship, and that we don't understand that this is the first step on the path to taking us to much worse things? We cannot let this happen, this is an illegal move and we will oppose it.".
""You cannot destroy what we have built for 75 years. What you are doing is worse than all the regimes we do not want to be like - the Turks, the Hungarians and the Poles.".
Then he added: "Even in Nazi Germany, they came to power democratically. We are not Hungarians or Poles and we will not agree to this.".
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded: "The opposition has gone off the rails: Ram Ben-Barak shamefully and scandalously compares the Israeli government to the Nazis. The protest leaders tried to imprison coalition members in their homes. The opposition members desecrated the Israeli flag in the Knesset plenary. The opposition has gone off the rails – we continue!".
