The final hours of the box: Attempts to glean information about what happened in the final moments before the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 are still ongoing.
At a press conference convened by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, along with Chinese Prime Minister Xi Jinping, Abbott said: "We are entering a phase where the signal from what we are sure is the black box is starting to fade," noting that they hope to "obtain as much information as possible before the signals fade away permanently.".
In recent days, four signals from the black box have been received, some during the search being conducted about 2,200 kilometers northwest of the city of Perth, Australia, in addition to two signals that were received several days earlier.
Meanwhile, another finding was published in a Malaysian newspaper, according to which a few minutes before the plane disappeared from radar, the co-pilot, 27-year-old Farik Abdul Hamid, made a phone call, apparently to one of his regular contacts. The call was disconnected because the plane was flying too fast and too far from the communications tower. An examination of the mobile device also shows that the device was disconnected before the plane took off, but at some point during the flight, it was turned back on.
It was also reported that Hamid sent a WhatsApp message shortly before the flight, and the identity of the recipient is still unknown.
In Malaysia, efforts are underway to discover the identity of the recipients of the call and message.
Hamid's cousin was quoted in the newspaper as saying: "If he could have called one person before the plane disappeared, it would have to be his mother. Freak was very close to her.".
