The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today (Tuesday) approved the fourth dose of Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine for people aged 50 and over and for people aged 12 and over who suffer from a problem with their immune system.

According to a Reuters report, Pfizer cited in its approval application the data collected in Israel, after the fourth vaccine was given since January to those aged 60 and over, to those aged 18 and over with underlying diseases, and to other groups who are at high exposure to patients or people at risk.

The FDA recommended taking the fourth dose at least 4 months after the third, as is done in Israel.

The decision was made by the Food and Drug Administration in an unusual manner, without consulting the Vaccine Advisory Committee.

The Israeli Ministry of Health issued a statement in response to the FDA's approval: "If you are over the age of 60 and have not yet been vaccinated with the fourth vaccine - now is the time. If you have relatives in this age group who have not yet received it - encourage them to do so immediately.".

""The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today approved the blanket administration of the fourth vaccine to people aged 50 and over, in light of a body of scientific evidence that the fourth dose is safe and that it significantly improves protection (up to 4 times) against severe coronavirus illness and death in this population that is at increased risk for it. Don't take any chances. Go get vaccinated.".
