Kashrut reform: The Tel Aviv Religious Council filed a defamation lawsuit against a restaurateur who appeared before the Committee for Jewish Religious Services, headed by MK Yulia Malinovsky.
The committee chairwoman said at the beginning of the discussion: "I saw yesterday that a religious council in Tel Aviv issued a warning letter against a restaurateur who participated in a discussion last week. The lady appeared in a public discussion in the Knesset. People should not be afraid to speak publicly in the Knesset. A religious council belongs to the state and receives public funds, and it hired a shark lawyer from public funds and sends a warning letter to a restaurateur - I think it is inappropriate. The Knesset is a platform to speak without fear. I receive many requests from hotelier and restaurateur organizations to meet, but they are afraid to come up and speak in the committee.".
MK Uri Maklev responded: "A lady comes and lies to the Knesset members, lies to the committee, and you defend her? The employees of the Tel Aviv Religious Council are doing sacred work. The lady who appeared at the committee is suspected of withholding wages from employees of the Tel Aviv Religious Council. She called them parasites - let everyone know that if they slander and come to the committee to lie, they are not immune and will be held accountable for it.".
Maklev added: "Where is the representation of the kashrut supervisors? This is a one-sided discussion, you are going to fire thousands of employees and you are not allowing them representation here on the committee.".
The chairman of the United Torah Judaism faction, MK Yitzhak Pindros, said in the debate: "The entire purpose of the reform is to avenge Rabbi Stav for not being elected Chief Rabbi of Israel. His emissaries are here in the room so that his revenge can be carried out. I am ready to lift the immunity of those who sue me for defamation.".
